Soothing Sounds

Children's Yoga Sensory Activity Soothing Sounds

With all the back to school business going on, it's sometimes nice to just sit and listen. This fun sensory activity is one that Amy Pancake uses in her kids yoga classes when the times call for a little de-stress activity.

Kids (and grown-ups too!) can sit criss-cross applesauce either in a circle or back to back with a friend to make it more fun. Then we take a deep breath and practice long vowel sounds, feeling how they vibrate through the body. When sitting back to back, you can take turns to see if you feel your partner's sound vibration as they make the sound.

Sometimes we chant OMMMMMMMMMMMMM or AAAAAAAAAAA or EEEEEEEEE. Take your time trying each letter a few times so you can sense what it's like. Make sure you take a deep breath between each sound. Fill your belly, lungs and chest with air and then let it vibrate!!!

Next try to whisper the OMMM or A or E sound, how does that feel?

This activity can be grounding and helps kids to work together and treat each other with kindness.

We'd love to hear from you! What are your experiences like with this yoga sensory activity?
