Welcome to Chakra Kids Yoga!
Hi everyone! Welcome to Chakra Kids Yoga! Liz and I are thrilled to share lots of kids yoga fun with you. A little about myself to get things rolling here in Bloglandia. I was born...just kidding...I'm a yoga teacher. I started teaching in February, 2002. About 5 years later, I had the opportunity to try yoga with preschoolers at a Montessori style preschool. I could not believe how much they enjoyed it, and what a nice effect it had on the rest of their school day. We started a weekly class, made a yoga corner students could use anytime, and I was hooked! I started teaching a couple of toddler classes at Kula Yoga, and between myself, several other passionate kids teachers, a studio owner who had a vision for yoga for all ages and stages of life, we created a kids yoga program at Kula for kids from 6 weeks of age through high school. Along the way I've been fortunate to have taught yoga to kids at Omega Teen camp in NY, many schools and camps in Austin, Austin Kula Yoga, Eastside Yoga, Yoga Yoga, Community Yoga Austin, Wells Branch Elementary School, AISD, Jump! Gymnastics, Kim's Gym, and soon will be working with Bliss Kid Yoga. I've taught workshops on how to teach yoga to kids, and have taught as a guest instructor in yoga teacher training programs. Designing a teacher training program is the next step in this beautiful adventure.
Kids yoga is important for many reasons. Our daily lives and activities aren't meeting our bodies' need for movement. We sit too much, we spend too long on computers, we drive too much - and our kids are growing up that way. We can't really quit modern life, but we can adapt to it by cultivating habits that help us feel healthy, strong, clear headed, focused, peaceful, and ready for anything. By learning about our breath and how it can help us to regulate our moods, we can use simple breath techniques to calm down, or to get some extra energy going when we're flagging - most adults I know would agree that yoga definitely helps them feel more emotionally present and at ease, and that it gives them sustained energy. Yoga is also fun to make into play. What a gift that our physical work out can be different each time we do it!
